that takes cues from the continent about you stupid rednecks" pose has got to be the most syncophantic, irritating voice for critique.  top 3 at least.

Except not. Headers in soccer can cause concussions, as do collisions.

Part of the problem and what we're seeing now is a recognition that concussions are serious and need to be addressed.  No going back in the game.  But the author doesn't like football, so he gives no attention to the other side - people who like watching it and people who like playing it, even if they'll never make money.  It's not just large men crashing into each other -- it's a speed and skill game more than anything.

      Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

take away the crashing, and you'll lose fans by the millions. Not saying the speed and skill aren't real - but they don't sell tickets and commercial time.

The popularity of sports violence doesn't excuse allowing it to happen or countenance allowing athletes to be bribed into allowing themselves to be injured.

          •  Football is so popular because it is the most (1+ / 0-)

intellectual and violent of the major sports. It has created a unique hybrid that isn't fast passed, or dynamic. During the game more time is spent planning than playing. However, it is extremely complex which adds to its allure.

I have played every major sport except ice hockey, and many minor sports including polo (the kind with horses) and I have never had as much fun as playing organized tackle football.
