  •  I Recall Heinlein's Story "Coventry"... (5+ / 0-)

    ...in which an region was set aside, with the government offering convicts the choice of a normal sentence or exile with no further interference (other than "we'll shoot you if you try to return").

    A particularly apropos bit: this story was set after the fall of a theocratic state ("If This Goes On...") and some of the irreconcilables had re-established that regime in part of the exile zone.

      but part of the "normal sentence" was that you had to conform to the norm of society (freedom, equality, etc.) and those who refused to be "normal" went to Coventry.

      Actually, the fall was detailed in "Revolt in 2100".
