Consummate politician.  Not honorable, but effective; not a statesman, but possessed of more political savvy than King.

More seriously, I believe Hatch is ready to do a "hatch-et" job on the Heritage Foundation because he realizes it will be the death knell of the Republican Party.

The split is coming.  Only, it won't be a split as much as it will be a splintering into many parts: Tea Bagging tax nuts, government drowners, Christianists, gun nuts, and racists.

Each fanatic wing feels they've been betrayed by the traditional party members at one time or another who are not "pure" enough.  By big business, by so-called values candidates whose values are too flexible for the fanatics, and by anyone who will let brown people into white America under any circumstances.

The Republican Party will end up with a small minority of people who ID as Republican and Libertarian.  We'll also have to contend with the Tea Party, Nihilists, The Jesus Party, the 2nd Amendment Party, and the Birchers.  To name a few.

And they will get elected.  They'll form "floating" coalitions that coalesce and dissolve, depending on the issue.  Hell to pay.  Because it will lead to the rise of The Great Middle Party as Republicans claim that ground, which will bleed plenty of Democrats and Independents away and end up making us a more conservative country than we already are since the Great Middle Party will often join one or another of the fanatical parties when it suits, creating an insurmountable majority for Dems to resist.

Unless Republicans like Hatch and that despicable worm, McConnell (no, I will not praise him!), McCain, and a few others seize control and crush the radical right wing elements that now have the upper hand, that's going to be the future of the Democrats' opposition.

as long as they have librul Democrats to fight against. They may fight it out in the primaries, but the Tea Party, the Birchers, the Klan, and the other GOP hate groups will still stick together in the general elections because they hate reasonable, intelligent, good-hearted people most of all.
