  •  Good thoughts, but one quibble. (7+ / 0-)

West Virginia has been tilting Red lately, but still votes Blue on balance. Dems have both U. S. Senate seats, the governor's mansion, both the state senate and the state legislature, one out of three Congress seats, a majority of the (elected) state supreme court.

    •  And I would suspect that a large part of (6+ / 0-)

why WV went for Romney is because he was white.

Not the most colorful state in the union. Except for the landscape in the fall, when it's gorgeous.

      •  No doubt. It's race. (4+ / 0-)

Hillary would have done very well in WV in the presidential general. Both she and Bill are extremely popular here. In fact, her primary percentage vs BHO and Edwards were better than Rmoney vs BHO.
        2008 WV Dem primary:
                  Hillary Clinton  67%
                  Barack Obama 25%
                  John Edwards    7%

        2012 WV general:
                   Mitt Romney    62%
                   Barack Obama 35%

Kind of apples and oranges, but, sadly, you are right. Romney's whiteness assured his huge win.

The energy politics are getting to the state, and it's not the only place that's happened. But as in e.g. North Dakota, Dems can still win statewide races, and WV is a bit ahead in that regard because there aren't a ton of carpetbagger oil wildcats just moved in from Texas.

The whole situation is too bad, though, because basic economics are getting to coal more than anything else, and between that and the climate, the state would be fools to hang their future on it. Perhaps our current policy is a bit too friendly to natural gas in comparison, given it's also a fossil fuel, but that's tinkering around the edges. WV needs a real development policy for people displaced by the decline of coal.

          fold?
When i start to get so angry about the Rs overt racism, I only need remember the 2008 primary to realize we have our share too.  Sadly.

    •  Thanks for catching that . . . . (2+ / 0-)

. . . . Hillbilly Dem.  I questioned the same thing when I read the post.  To my mind, West Virginia is definitely not "solidly red".

during the shutdown. Every single time I told the staffer on the phone that if Mrs. Capito thinks that when she's running for Rockefeller's Senate seat next year she can conveniently ignore her passivity during this fight, she'd better think again.

I've got a long list of small newspapers in WV and I'm already working on my LTEs to every single one of them ...

(Oh, and so you don't think I'm totally rude, I called today and told the staffer that I was glad to see that she voted to end the shutdown and raise the debt ceiling. But that Capito has not demonstrated one whit of leadership during the whole ordeal.)

West Virginia's new motto: Ex Os, Ex Mens (go look it up)
