  •  Yes, and what's wrong with "entitlements"? (4+ / 0-)
    •  In the abstract nothing (3+ / 0-)

But in this context it's used to imply greedy seniors with their hands out, and a give me, give me attitude.

      •  IMO we have to stop stop abandoning words (7+ / 0-)

just because RW idiots (or LW dolts, for that matter) find them offensive.

For example, an entitlement is exactly this, right?

Entitlement. An individual's right to receive a value or benefit provided by law.
        •  When they stop taking up words (4+ / 0-)

and applying new meaning or implication to them. Which they're never going to do. And I am goddamn sick of hearing Social Security lumped in as some kind of "handout" that I'm "entitled to".

I'm certainly entitled to my own earned benefit. This particular earned benefit needs to come off the Democratic Leadership's table, because this benefit was derived from my earnings too, and I don't think they should be negotiable for any reason.

We earned those benefits by working for them and paying into the mandatory Social Security Tax "bucket". Not only did I have no choice but to pay into it, it came from my earnings.

I'm sick of people who don't understand language deciding for us all what language has to be used. Words matter, particularly when we're talking about something that is already ours.

This all started with "what the Republicans did to language".

          •  the word doesn't matter (0+ / 0-)

whatever word you choose, the Republicans will slime it up and wipe it all over you.

Where do you think the word "entitlements" came from?  Republicans didn't make it up.  It was coined to capture the essence of these programs, that they provide what their beneficiaries are owed.

So you change it to "earned benefits" and the Republicans will twist that around to make it sound scummy.  And they'll use the same exact imagery.

      •  It doesn't imply SQUAT... (4+ / 0-)

It is an entitlement because the government is REQUIRED to pay it as a result of that which was paid into the program for decades before.

Frankly, I think our side is a little too word-sensitive in this area. The public knows what SS is...which is why our side shouldn't even be thinking about tinkering with it unless we're instituting measures to shore up its benefit distribution.

Adequate health care should be a LEGAL RIGHT in the U.S without begging or bankruptcy. Until it is, we should not dare call our society civilized.

      •  Shall we flee for the correct word (4+ / 0-)

        because Republicans pervert it's meaning?

It's 'entitlements' because people are 'entitled' to it, having paid for it. Better to make that clear to the people rather than find some weaker synonym which the Republicans will again twist, anyway.

    •  Never quite understood that myself... (5+ / 0-)

      Definition of entitlement:

a right to benefits specified especially by law or contract

SS is a mandatory outlay...and per the Social Security Act, it guarantees payments to retirees.

If those two realities don't go together like peas and carrots, I don't know which do :)
