    People could then mostly fend for themselves and may well even wind up owing some income tax once they are above the poverty level. That might push up revenues to pay to keep a military base or three open.

      both programs for those no longer working.  However, if the minimum wage and minimum SS payments were both significantly increased, many other programs could be cut by a lot.  Food stamps, housing assistance, heating assistance.  There would be a whole lot fewer needing those things than there are now if they were receiving a decent amount upfront.
