    early 60s and the great-aunties I remember were born around 1890s. They were widowed homemakers barely surviving on charity.

    I'm not sure how SS benefits worked for them, since several were widowed during the depression before SS was in place, so neither they nor their husbands contributed much to the system.

    If your relatives didn't experience anything like I described, then yours were fortunate indeed.
