    As such, I have no problem with a church establishing guidelines or rules for its congregants to live by and encouraging said congregants to maintain adherence to those rules even by exerting influence in their lives outside of the church (say, in their families, private schools, etc.).  If a church wants to encourage its members to vote on social issues - like abortion, poverty, discrimination - I have no problem with that.  However, I do not believe any church or religious organization has the right to claim tax-exempt status and (1) give money to political parties, candidates, campaigns or causes which will do the same; (2) explicitly tell their congregants who they should or must vote for in any elections; or (3) attempt to interfere with governance at any level in an effort to substitute church doctrine for the law of the land or the will of the people.  As Americans we enjoy Freedom of Religion.  We'd better start asking ourselves who is going to protect our freedoms from religion...
