It is very odd that the premiums would be so much higher and the benefits lower.  Why would your current insurance company cancel your policy if it was already good enough (better than Bronze)?  That seems fishy.  I think this is the insurance company using the ACA as an excuse.

I would imagine there are limited cases where this can be a real problem, but believe they are anomolies (sucks if it's you though!!!  sorry...) and not the cost of universal care.

There are costs to universal care, yes.  But I do not think that the ACA was designed for the exact burdeon you are seeing.  I believe the burdeon that is designed... expected... so to speak... is mostly placed on those who are young, healthy, and had previously chosen to forgo insurance.  That is, the burdeon is supposed to be going on those who are being forced to have significantly better coverage than they had before.

Something is wrong with your case.  I don't know what it is.  Maybe it's some bizarre corner situation, or maybe there is a better plan out there that you just haven't found yet?  Or maybe your existing insurance policy was a bit of a mistake or somehow grandfathered into lower premiums???

I'm really curious because your situation doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.  There is no legitimate economic reason for your premiums to go up now.  Maybe later we will see an increase because we don't know how this will all shake out.  But right now, I am quite perplexed by your situation and I hope that I am right and you manage to find away around this increase.

      Best of luck!

Here's a real quick calculator for you to make sure what your insurance company offered you was reasonable:

(It shows you the cost of the second least expensive silver plan in your zip code regardless of whether you qualify for a subsidy.)
