  •  so sad!!! (10+ / 0-)

my local greenhouse/garden center has been in business I think over 50 years now.  some stuff is definitely overpriced, but when they have a sale, it's a good sale!  And plus it's local and not home depot and it's a family run business.  I'd hate to see them go ever!

I'm sorry about your local place.  Too too sad.

    •  We lost ours when Walmart (9+ / 0-)

came to town. In this case I don't think it was the competition but rather the old couple who ran it suddenly saw their property values more than double and they decided to retire. Still, broke my heart.

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay. Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away. John Prine

      •  It's one thing... (10+ / 0-)

I try to do... support local businesses.

Mine is now being run with three generations involved - not sure if this last generation will pick it up as their parents get older, but I've been shopping here because my Dad would take me with him when he'd need some garden tool or part when I was a kid.  They've grown their business since then, and found they needed to expand to other types of things sold... along with really establishing themselves as a neighborhood fixture (so they'll have events for kids as well).  It was the only way they could compete with the big box stores!

I know plenty of people in our area who complain about their costs, but they also sell things I wouldn't be able to find unless i ordered online.  In the end, with shipping costs, sometimes things just come up even.
