... won primarily because of a model's suggestion?

I don't want to get too specific in case KFA ...

As is so often the case, i wasn't too happy with the judging on this, the very first episode.  Tisk tisk!  My favorite did not win, and the worst looks (in my humble opinion) were clustered into the "safe" category.  However, as you said, the bar seems fairly high this time, so i think it's going to be a very good season overall ... :)

It was my pick for the top spot. Of the top three Seth Aaron's plaid-panted ensemble was much too polished to be punk and Jeffrey's badass deconstructed wedding gown was too reminiscent of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" from the 1980s. The colorful winning jacket was a believable update of punk style even if the suggestion to wear it backwards came from the model. My second place choice ended up safe in the middle; Christopher creatively captured a modern punk vibe with his pieced-together safety-pinned design. I also thought Melissa and Korto's efforts were worthy of higher consideration as well. Mychael's little white dress was gorgeously killer but again a little too perfect to be punk.

The design in the middle of the pack that was a disappointingly lackluster dud was Daniel's. Apparently he unpacked one of his too-familiar all-black big-shouldered creations from last season and added a bright pink frayed auto filter for a belt and passed it off as punk. My roommate thought it looked like Joan Collins got stuck in the cleaning pads of an automatic car wash. It was impossibly boring.

I thought Ari should have been given a second chance and Viktor sent packing. His grommeted jacket and summery patterned pants just didn't work. The giant bag and matching shoes only served to make it worse. Viktor's outfit belongs in one of the TJ Maxx commercials currently on TV which makes it decidedly NOT punk. At least Ari had a moment of true punk-influenced inspiration when she cut off the legs of the pants and used them as sleaves. It would have been fun to see Ari's unique perspective of women's fashion but inexplicably the judges believed otherwise.

Up next week; the REAL Elena returns!

I remember these names... Korto, Viktor, Seth, is that Jeffrey with the bad attitude? And who is Christopher or Melissa? Which Daniel?

Everyone standing on the damn runway when IWU looked completely foreign to me!

from their season on the show. The one I was drawing a blank on was Mychael; that is until I saw his amazing little white dress for this challenge. Then I remembered that he has an incredible gift for dressing women. His clothes were modern and very sexy for the most iirc.

Christopher was one of those embattled and controversial contestants. He bounced along the bottom but also won challenges too. I distinctly recall a dark red gown he made that was horribly reminiscent of a 1980s prom dress which the judges loved. The other contestants constantly bad-mouthed him and iirc he generated a bit of disagreement here as well. I always thought he was adorable.

When Ari was on the show three years ago she was known as Andy; it was before she fully transitioned from male to female.

Melissa shared the same season as Elena; there was a lot of stress and drama between the two. There is a quiet earnestness to Melissa which she backs up with great designs.

as Melissa and Elena. He won more challenges that season than any other contestant including Dmitry the eventual winner. Christopher showed at Fashion Week and came in fourth, Melissa came in second, and Fabio was the first runner-up.

The ugly prom-style dress was Michael Costello's; yet another polarizing contestant on PR. He's the one that cried a LOT!

            I need a rewrite:

Well, we're all really stretching our memories here (you and Kish recall a lot more than i do), but i seem to recall your mentioning in a post that Christopher looked like a thinner, younger Michael Costello.  And there is a similarity.  So it makes sense to me that you'd be mixing them up.

I had a hard time placing some of the contestants.  Melissa, if i'm remembering properly, used a lot of black in her designs, and was very nose-to-the-grindstone in her approach.  I liked her.  I remember being sorry when she was dismissed. :)  Jeffrey was the one who Laura (the red head who was pregnant all the time and had a gorgeous apartment in New York) accused of cheating, and he was kind of the antagonist of his season (So much so that Uli, upon seeing him for the finale, said something along the lines of, "Are people throwing eggs at you?"  It was striking, because Uli wasn't even remotely catty.  From anyone other than her, it would have sounded mean!).

Anyway, i've got to get more coffee in me, but i'm with you.  Some of the contestants were only vaguely familiar, and then i'd suddenly say, "Oh yea!  I remember who they are now."

"My roommate thought it looked like Joan Collins got stuck in the cleaning pads of an automatic car wash."  Perfect!  Spot on description.  This is the one i thought should have landed on the bottom.  On the other hand, your roommate is on to something - Add some pink to the sleeves and legs and it would have made a great Halloween costume - Look!  I'm a car wash!  Can i scrub you?

Maybe some of Daniel's mustache wax was clogging his ears and he heard "pink" instead of "punk" ...

        ... in his final collection?

I'm going to have to look these contestants up.  I'm really struggling to place them firmly in their respective seasons ...

I looked up his Fashion Week collection. Yikes! Maybe I'm confusing him with someone else...

... to fashion week.  I think he had some kind of "hooker warrior" theme.  Urban warrior?  I don't remember how he characterized it, but it was basically a "more skin is better" approach to fashion.  Even last night's design incorporated what was very close to being a cheek exposing hemline.  Windows, i think.  He used a lot of cut outs.

We'll see what he does this go around.

I think he changed the spelling of his name because some other famous person also had his name... and he wanted to be differentiated from that other person.

I think he just needed to mature more as a designer. I hope he has!!  He styled his models beautifully!!!
