  •  The reports I've read about bird eating seals (6+ / 0-)

    suggest it's a prey issue, ie not enough fish, or during a certain season. Around here most of the fish I see are baitfish, sand lance and such, only a few inches big. However I followed some otters once over to the shore and found the remains of a foot-long rockfish one had caught and dropped there before scarpering up the bank, so I know there are bigger fish out there.

    These bays I'm observing at are pretty shallow, 20-30 feet at most.

    That incident the other day chasing grebes was really unusual. The way they were all fishing today is what I usually see. Could be the seal was just playing that day, toying with them.
