    •  We "overinvested" in process... (6+ / 0-)

...and underinvested in organization. This was at all levels.

POTUS engaged in organizational "unilateral disarmament" as part of his effort to change the culture of Washington. Many other Left of Center groups did as well and focused effort on pushing "siloed" policy interests. And far too many people on the Left of Center spectrum minimized the importance and impact of Redistricting.

Perhaps 2010 was unavoidable to some degree. But we neglected organizational maintenance as "pre-2008" thinking. Many hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of our "casual" voters were never approached one on one or in small groups of interaction at any point in 2010 for a variety of reasons. We ceded organizational ground early and tried to reclaim it much too late in the process. No matter how disappointed we get with policy impotence, we can never again fail to maintain organizational contract with our "casual" voters. It's really the only way we can really defeat our political opponents over the long term. I'm not saying its easy or automatic, but I am saying that not trying guarantees failure.

The "unilateral disarmament" wasn't limited to attempting to demonstrate post-partisan idealism with regard to foregoing certain campaign financing, but also with attempting to not accuse specific actors and groups with regard to moving legislation.

Partisan organization needs identified "villains." For the longest time POTUS and much of our leadership refused to "name names." At a basic level, our leadership conflated ALL political discourse with "business as usual that should be ended" in Washington.
