  •  it could be worse, Joe (5+ / 0-)

there is a thin wall, but who's to say it won't be torn down tomorrow?

Every car, for example, has a "black box" installed that records numerous events when you have an accident which deploys an airbag.  One of the things it records is whether or not you were wearing your seat belt.  There is auto technology that can record how fast you drive.  What if that data were made available to auto insurers?

I think there are some walls in place now, but I have no faith that they will remain in place.

If health insurance companies had access to your consumer habits, for example (Dear Keith930, our records indicate you have made an unacceptable number of purchases from the liquor store over the past year, and your debit card records show that you have been purchasing tobacco products as well.  In light of this information, we regret to inform you that...)

As for all of the cc cameras and the degree to which your debit cards and cell phone are virtual electronic ankle bracelets informing the authorities of your whereabouts...Yesterday's Boston Marathon bomber could easily be tomorrows political activist agitating for greater transparency in government.  The technology works just as well for the Unabomber as it does for political gadflies.

And I really don't see a political solution to the situation.

Through early morning fog I see visions of the things to be the pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see...

    •  More to the point, although I understand (5+ / 0-)

your point, things have gotten so complicated and our congresscritters haven't been able to keep up NOR have they been able to do anything but hang with the lobbyists and let the lobbyists write the laws!. We effectively have laws written by the very people that we would like to REGULATE!

One of the reasons it is so bad is the fact that congress spends 90 to 95 percent of its time fund raising. THEY COULD CARE LESS about our privacy cause it isn't bringing them in any money. Now the Obama Care Scare gives them something and the banksters are always willing to give them something, but people on the other side of NSA? US? We can't compete with the IC and the MIC.

It seems that all my life we have been bombing someone, teaching them a lesson. Every day I understand more deeply how violent we are. Violent to others and violent to ourselves. - Robert Olmstead

if the institution that oppresses you is an unaccountable government or a gigundous corporate behemoth, the difference is without distinction.

if we have a glorious revolution and throw off the chains of our government masters - but we continue to use these technologies - we continue to empower an oppressive bureaucracy.  i have real questions about whether we can tame the monster; if the power that comes of having such access to our data isn't too tempting for an organization of any sort.

it is a horse that we hang onto, bareback, and it will take us wherever it chooses to go.

There truly are some genies that can't be put back into the bottle.  At least not without one helluva fight.

It is an interesting topic.  Everyone should check out and bookmark the Electronic Frontier Foundation's website.  This is all they do.
