  •  I Adore Big Old Trees (6+ / 0-)

Raleigh is the City of the Oaks.  I have a 30-40 year old oak in the front yard that takes two people to get their arms around.  It's a tough youngster.  Survived a lightening strike about ten years ago.  Bad scar and needed nursing.

I read an article about old growth redwoods that I wish I could find.  There are some remote groves that dwarf The Valley of the Giants.  They were doing a study of the biosphere of the canopy.  There were trees with three feet of seiment on their branchs, with rhodedenruns and maple growing in the canopy.

Anyway, the point is that The Cathedral Grove, article above, should be protected at all costs.

This edition of National Geographic is fantastic:

a couple of summers ago i visited an old growth forest on the olympic peninsula and had a great time staring up at 300 foot tall trees that a half dozen people might have been able to get their arms around.

Temperate rain forest is cool, but bums Keith.

Took the kids to Muir Woods to see little sequoia.

Also caught Sean Costello at Dan Glover's club in SF.

The tree in the National Geographic is estimated to be the largest biomass tree and about 2000 years old.
