    i look forward to anything he does. when i heard about this film, i knew it would be a very big deal. and based on his past work, i'm guessing that the best thing about the film won't be the unusually honest depiction of the history, it will be the acting. he gets routinely brilliant performances from his actors.

    and all that said, the obvious reason why the violence is considered shocking is because even though it is so routine in pop culture, only rarely is violence depicted even remotely honestly. and of course, a culture that considers gone with the wind a classic doesn't want to remember what slavery and the slave trade really were.
