an Overton Democrat. But that's okay. We lost something valuable when we lost a firm centrist cushion. I like a balance of ideas.

    •  No question we need plurality (7+ / 0-)

I'm not a partisan and I never have been, even though the last Republican I voted for was Hutchison in 1992. They went batshit crazy shortly thereafter and I haven't looked back. I've never been a member of either major party though and to be honest, at this time BOTH of them are too conservative for my taste. Whether the Republicans have damaged their brand beyond redemption remains to be seen but no doubt we need a counterweight instead of a dead weight.

Key is the kind of Republican I'd have voted for, back when the Republican Party included actual moderates, if there weren't a better Democrat in the race. So I wouldn't feel bad voting for someone like him on the Democratic line.

If the Democrats can absorb enough candidates like Key, maybe it will finally grow large enough that it can split in two -- Conservative Democrats and Social Democrats -- without jeopardizing either faction's ability to prevail in a winner-take-all race.
