  •  No worries..I know swampyankee knows, but I (15+ / 0-)

often think of our readers and lurkers who are new and
might not know stuff.  I'm weird that way.

Like onions.  No, I'm not weird like onions (yet)....onions aren't good for fur babies.  Chocklit isn't, either.  We know it, most of us...but we all had to learn it at some point.

Oh, and people.  We don't make good snacks for our furbabies, either....although Moses does seem to have a different idea!

    •  I think that vets make an error when they tell (14+ / 0-)

clients not to feed "people food". Because we know that's nuts - dog food IS people food; just usually poor quality people food not fit for human consumption so we tend to ignore the vets.

Dog food is made of lamb and rice, fish and sweet potatoes, duck and oats. All are "people food". You can even buy good brands that are USDA grade fit for human consumption.

Grapes (including raisins) and chocolate are really the only things you can't feed your dog.

I feed human grade dog food and cat food along with some homemade and snacks are things like rice cakes, carrots, crackers, bagels etc.

Tracy B Ann - technically that is my signature. If I had Bill Gates money, I'd buy Detroit.

      •  You are right! I should've specified that people (11+ / 0-)

"quality" food is preferable to the stuff that gets put in most pet foods.

They spend more on advertising than they do in quality ingredients, imho.

Some of the best advice I got, for both people and pet food is this: make sure you know what the ingredients are; the fewer, the better.

Put another way: no more than five main ingredients, and the first three should be recognisable as food.

It isn't always possible (ever eat a Twinkie?? :-D ) but it's good rule of thumb advice.

        •  :-) Now you know why... (7+ / 0-)

... I eat Häagen-Dazs ice cream.  Short ingredient list with pronounceable names of ingredients.

Odd, though.  Once I made the switch to an ice cream with a short ingredient list, I can't stand the flavors of most other ice creams with long ingredient lists of odd names.  I assume it's because of the unpronounceable ingredients, but still... the flavor is really, really off and icky, icky, icky!

They may be people food, but onions are definitely NOT pet food.  IIRC, garlic also falls into the same category.

Onions are even in baby/toddler food (altho why onions are in baby food is beyond any logic I can think of), so if someone feeds that to their pets when pet is ill, they must become fanatic label readers to avoid onions.
