When he calls out the guy who claims to be the Catholic League, or the American Bishops, I'll know he's serious.

    •  Why do you think only outside the Church? (9+ / 0-)

It's not clear to me that he's targeting inside or outside the Catholic Church. The Raw Story headline indicates inside the church, but that's not evident.

My sense is that the papal role historically views itself as the spiritual leader of all Christians, whether they have separated away from the Catholic church or not.  I interpret the Pope's comments in that context.

However, I think he would have a far greater effect if he did explicitly target the ideological deadwood within the Catholic Church, especially starting with the bishops.   My sense is that he is setting the stage and warming up to that future task.   This is a simmering popcorn event.  The bishops are accustomed to criticizing and censoring those below them in the hierarchy; it will be a new world when the spotlight is focused on their un-Christlike behaviors.

Seriously, would you give this much leeway to a republican figure talking about unnamed 'inflexible and ideological politicians' as a sign that he knows the people in his own party are fricken' nuts?

Not that finger-pointing and blame is a very refined, polished way to act, and I doubt that the pope of all people would ever use his position to do such a thing, but I just don't see this as anything special.
