    My siblings and I have never been sure whether Dad's distant cousin was named Wilma or Vilma.

    Some of the elder relations pronounced her name one way, and some the other way. Some of them also often reversed their Vs and Ws on other words--but none of them did it consistently, for every V and every W.

    Some day one of us will have a spare moment and look her up on line somehow, and ansver the kvestion for good.

      Various languages lack various sounds so it is very difficult for them to speak a second language with a feature they are not familiar with (trust me on this; I tried Vietnamese and Thai many, many years ago and decided I hated tonal languages)
