  •  And totally unnecessary... (8+ / 0-)

given that we far outspend any other nation on our military alone (and, as you point out, that doesn't include the rest of the national security apparatus.) According to figures compiled by Global Issues from SIPRI data, the U.S. now accounts for 39% of total world military expenditures. Our nearest competitor in this regard is China, who only accounts for 9.5% of total expenditures, while our old Cold War opponent Russia accounts for only 5.2%. There's simply no way that defense, as opposed to the offensive military imperialism we regularly engage in, requires this kind of expenditure. We could cut the U.S. military budget in half and still vastly out-spend the rest of the world to a point where no other country could possibly be a military threat to us. But that would be a direct attack on the MIC and the giant corporations (especially Lockheed-Martin and Boeing) that control it.

Don't hold your breath on any real reductions in our military spending; you'll get a heck of a headache that way.

    •  Absolutely. If it really was for our defense and (9+ / 0-)

security we wouldn't need half of what they've created.  I suppose that should be the people's first clue.  Then again, they've got this "world's policeman" bullshit out there now, the "Global Force for Good", indicating to the public that our "security" depends on keeping the entire world safe.  While single handedly making the world less safe.
