The modern GOP is a chimera, a monster composed of two (or 3) parts.  It emerged when some party leaders in the 60's managed to broker a coalition between the social conservatives and the big-money financial/Wall Street conservatives, who mostly despised each other.  The social conservatives wanted to fight racial equality, feminism, birth control and abortion,  etc , and generally preserve their version of traditional White Christian Civilization.  (They hadn't even realized yet they'd have to fight GLBT rights too.)

The Wall Street types wanted to repeal Glass Steagel, crush unions, gut the New Deal, get taxes on the rich to drop like a stone, and generally consolidate their control of the economy.

TO ask yourself who primarily controls the chimera, just check out which agenda has been pursued with full seriousness.

THe big money types don't really care about abortion, Jesus, immigration (cheap workers are good), or some stupid Ten Commandments monument in some Southern courthouse.  But they do want the votes of people who care about those things.  They are racist, but not obsessed with it the way many social conservatives are.  After all, their world is virtually all white already, and they expect it to stay that way.  BUt they're perfectly happy to make use of racism to further their power.

So Eric the Red is on the verge of seeing that the GOP uses the social conservatives for fundraising and whipping up the vote but doesn't pursue their agenca with full seriousness.

He'll never see that clearly, though, because then he'd have to admit what a fraudulent creation the Republican party is.

Politics is like driving. To go backward put it in R. To go forward put it in D.
