  •  There were a few disasters that I remember.... (7+ / 0-)

earthquakes, specifically.  I just tell people I can make the earth move.  heh.

1633    Galileo Galilei is tried before the Inquisition for teaching that the Earth orbits the Sun.

1846    Elizabeth Barrett & Robert Browning elope.

1848    "Bond (US) & Lassell (England) independently discover Hyperion, moon of Saturn" .

1849    "First commercial laundry established, in Oakland, California".

1879    "Cliftonville Football Club, the oldest club in Ireland, are founded by John McCredy McAlery."

1928    Mickey Mouse's screen debut (Steamboat Willie at Colony Theater NYC).

1946    The first Cannes Film Festival is held.

1969    John Lennon leaves The Beatles but does not make a public announcement.

1982    The first sideways smiley face was invented!! :-)

Pretty wild mix...I left out all the tragedy stuff, though...except for Galileo.  I figure he deserved a mention, since it took them five hundred freaking years to issue an apology!!  sheesh.
