How many more of these disasters will it take before the US has its own cabinet-level IT department? Will we have one by 2050? 2040? 2030? or 2020?

I'll bet it will be at least 2030... and that we will be the last wealthy nation to have one.

Cabinet level it department? just wow

This isnt magic. It isnt voodoo. This is bottom run "coding". A bunch of perl/php/cgi/java/etc etc "code" likely interfaces an sql database (or 5 because the average programmer/sa is a drone these days) which is accessed by insurance companies/government agencies. This stuff was old in the 90s. The main difference is the more flashy/complex front end.

This was a massive f*ckup by hack .gov programmers/analysts that any SERIOUS company with a netcentric business wouldnt have let happen. What we are seeing is that the .govs it management is as incompetant as nasas management. Hint: noone will be punished... though those at fault will likely be promoted
