  •  California is going to try again (11+ / 0-)

I saw it at Raw Story, petitions are going out for signatures on a cannabis legalization initiative.  I think it should qualify for the 2014 ballot, hopefully not the primary.

In my lifetime, I swear to god, this insanity around a weed is going to end.

    •  Here's what Rolling Stone said a few months ago (6+ / 0-)

about the next 7 states to legalize:

      Alaska
      California
      Maine
      Nevada
      Oregon
      Rhode Island
      Vermont.

It will be interesting to see how their predictions come out.

And if a huge state like California legalizes things could move very quickly elsewhere.

Hell, even my 92-year-old, hard-right Repub mother voted to legalize here in Colorado.

When was the last time anyone in DC told America the f*cking truth?

    •  Here too... (6+ / 0-)

...in Alaska. We worked like mad in 2000. We only missed by 4%. This was in a time when it was still rabidly prohibitionist in the entire US.

I remember when I was a kid it was legal in Alaska and nowhere else.  I thought you guys were the libertarian type of R's up there.  Then you got all kooky.  Any insights you would be willing to share?

Because of Ravin we have been "legal" since 1975.

          However.

In 1994, I believe, the moralists developed a "citizens initiative and got it on the ballot to re-criminalize pot. In 2002, I believe, the Alaska Supreme Court (finally!) ruled that an initiative cannot overturn a Supreme Court judgement.

Since then, the cops leave you alone if you are alone in your house, but will confiscate whenever they can and blame the Feds. They never charge you because that would put a challenge in the courts. So we live in limbo. You can go to your door smoking a joint and there's nothing they will do. You just can't go outside your home with it or grow more than Ravin amounts without fear.

        •  They even had Mike Gravel as senator once! (2+ / 0-)

At least they have a Democratic senator and an 90s style Republican in Murkowski.  (She at least has SOME common sense.)  But they've always been quite Republican.  How much more libertarian style Republican do you get than voting in a write-in candidate for senate?

There is no reason that marijuana is not legal in California, except that the ballot initiative was held in 2010 rather than 2012. Now, they are are trying again for 2014. I heard someone from the group that supported the 2010 initiative making the lame excuse that it could not wait "because of all the people getting arrested and in jail." An excuse for a bad move. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results, then this is pure insanity.

which is fucking stupid, IMO. it should be on the ballot every year until it passes, like all the other crap they make us vote on.
