  •  You need Jamie Oliver to come in and teach (6+ / 0-)

your students about proper nutrition. I watched his show one time, and in a class of 1st graders, very few could identify any of the vegetables he held up. Cool teacher brought in a bunch of vegetables and taught them about them. Next time Oliver showed up, all the children could identify all the vegetables. It was great!

    •  We have two Jamie Olivers in house. (5+ / 0-)

One is our chef, who is an actual chef and teaches family cooking. The other is a wellness and gardening teacher who runs our organic garden that services some of the kitchen needs for the food chef cooks on campus. Our kids do all the garden work, they are extremely savvy and knowledgable.

The problems are endemic to their extremely poor and extremely transient community, that is also a food desert.

Throw in there certain Latino food traditions that emphasize lard in masa and harina tortillas, lard in refritos and other frijol dishes, lots of salt and a host of other things, you have obesity that is out of control.

Our students are way low on the scale compared to other area schools. We are doing it right.
