View Diary: Walmart brags that almost half its workers make $25,000 a year. That's something to brag about? (36 comments)

  •  Walmart is a very large part of WHY so many (6+ / 0-)

are making so little.  So singling them out is quite appropriate.  People need something tangible to understand what's going on.

    •  I'll be darned, and here I thought it was because (0+ / 0-)

      we were low paid.

I'll bear that in mind while digging holes. It's not because my customers will go elsewhere and get it done cheaper, it's because of walmart.

      •  Allow me to explain (3+ / 0-)

Walmart is by far the largest retailer in the country.

Because of that they can force their suppliers to lower their prices.

As a supplier your options are as such:

        1. Don't sell to Walmart and go out of business because they're the largest retailer by far.

        2. Sell to Walmart and meet their price demands even if it means cutting salaries or even moving production overseas. Keep in mind that they will expect you to lower prices every year. That means at some point you may still not be able to keep up.

Want a real world example? Huffy bicycles used to be made in Ohio. Because Walmart is the largest seller of bicycles, Huffy ultimately had to close their plant in Ohio and move production overseas to meet Walmart's pricing demands.

Because Walmart isn't in the hole-digging business, your prices weren't directly affected, but whoever made your shovel probably was.

        •  I work for a living, allow me to explain (0+ / 0-)

first eliminate the word salary from your vocabulary, call it wages. Wages are already as low as they can possibly go. Walmart exploits those low wages the same as Huffy or anyone else does.

You will never understand low wages as you will never work for them. From this side of things the view is much different.

          •  Why is it that I run into so many people (0+ / 0-)

who think they're the first person to ever to a day's work in their lives?

Not only did they pull themselves up by their own bootstraps they first invented boots.
