  •  Voter Suppression (15+ / 0-)

The 38K voter purge is the major reason I still worry about this race. The other reason is low Democratic turnout in off years.

I still think DKos Elections were right to upgrade this race to Likely Democratic Pick-up, but I hope McAuliffe and VA Dems have a great GOTV machine fired up and ready-to-go!

    •  Maybe there is a bright side there (4+ / 0-)

Since this election appears to be in the bag, any voter who shows up to vote and is denied will probably not affect the outcome, but WILL be alerted that there is something wrong with their current state of registration and they can correct it before the next election which could be much closer.

but it would be foolish to count on this. Not being a "concern troll." I am thrilled with McCauliffe's lead. I just don't trust the GOPers not to cheat.

    •  Your first worry is needless pants-wetting (3+ / 0-)

38,000 is an incredibly small number statewide. We've had more people purging in my COUNTY here in Ohio. Why? Because they moved.

No one has yet provided evidence that most of these purges in Virginia were illegitimate. But let's be generous to the pants-wetters and say HALF of them were (probably way more than reality) illegitimate and not people who moved. You're down to 19,000. At least a handful will be Republicans so let's say 18,000. Now let's say turnout is — and I' being SUPER generous here — 50%. A lot of those 18,000 don't show up at the polls. So we're down to 9,000. And that's high. All of my estimates are super-high in favor of OH NO! VOTER SUPPRESSION. Chances are a large majority of the purges were voters who moved or who were so inactive they weren't going to show up in an off year anyway.

We're talking about a handful of voters so small they could not possibly swing this election.

      Relax.
