  •  This is fundamental to conservative ideology (4+ / 0-)

Reinstating the actual purpose of the confederacy (maintaining slavery, and quite a bit of other legally enforced social stratification as well) is a bridge too far -- the confederates know that won't happen.  So they've separated chattel slavery into two components: (a) bigotry against non-white male Christians, sometimes with a thin protective veneer of concern trolling; (b) a generalized concept where people and property are one and the same thing, and where the economy is based on a fixed set of assets from which rents are extracted.

The latter sounds like economic wonkdom, but it is a fundamental ideological differentiator.  Secular westerners, be they right or left on economics, tend to differentiate between capital, labor, and capability (aka technology), and tend to view economic rents as a necessary evil (how necessary depends on how right or left you are) to allocate goods -- the real purpose of markets is to allocate both goods and capital efficiently.  The assumption is that this will produce increased economic output, which will trickle either up or down depending on which side you're on.  Confederates have none of these comments.  Wealthy people in the south made their fortunes by trading in human beings or speculating in land.
