      Instead of asking abstract questions here and downthread, why don't you tell us what you'd like. Personally, I'd like self-determination for Scots and they can have ours back. With their guns, anger and racism.

      The existence of a temporary majority of secessionists within a particular state does not oblige the rest of the US to acquiesce in 1.) Ceasing the protection of the non-secessionists in that state and 2.) Protecting the claim of the American citizenry to all the investments made by the US and the US claims to the territory of that state.
         If people don't wish to live under the jurisdiction of the United States of America, they have the option to emigrate to a country more to their liking.
         As for democracy: How long would any democracy last if the losers of elections could carve out pieces of territory where they hold majorities, and then leave the jurisdiction of the democracy?
