the wall, but crossed it - 7 times, IIRC.

And were driven back each time, and not by cannon fire.

All 3 of Pickett's brigadier generals were captured or killed. The same for all 9 of his colonels in charge of regiments. He himself emerged without a scratch ... hmmmm.

But were repulsed in hand to hand combat. One of the best parts of the film from Turner, "Gettysburg" was Richard Jordan (who would pass on soon after wrapping this film), playing Brigadier Gen. Lewis Armistad getting very close to the wall of blue only to be cut down.

And as for that wall of Blue- many of them had participated in the foolish charge against Marye's Heights at Fredricksburg just 6 months earlier. There, the situation had been the opposite of that charge at Gettysburg and the Federal troops suffered mightily.

On day three at Gettysburg as the Confederates drew closer and closer, the Federal troops defending began chanting "Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg!", each chant seemingly punctuated by musket fire. Now, there's no question rifled muskets delivered an aimed round on target for a couple of hundred yards, easily, but at that range, the Rebs were still being raked by cannonade. It was when they got close and their numbers severely reduced that musketry did the most damage and then of course, the hand to hand combat where little gunfire was employed at all.

I really don't think anything would have dislodged the Federals that day, they were simply too numerous and motivated.
