    From what I heard about it, Southerners, not having much of a clothing or any other significant industry, made do with any kind of color they could grab or have their wives and slaves make for their own uniforms. Gray was the average color for poor whites who didn't have much else, but it wasn't really at the beginning the standard color of their uniforms.
