    was never created by the captains of industry as a well-earned rest and reward for people still well enough to enjoy it.   That was more of a side-effect as healthcare and life expectancy happened to increase.    No, the concept of retirement was embraced by the ruling class as a convenient way to fire and get rid of workers whose best days of vigor were probably behind them.  

    Now that many of us work white-collar jobs and still have quite a bit of vigor into our 70s, it makes sense to them to work us until then.  Which might more or less work out, except, as noted by another commentator, for roofers and jackhammer operators and the like.
