When arguing with my Republican family members about how reasonable tax rates don't stifle freedom or growth - they enable it. Furthermore, tax rates are way down on the list of things that new companies worry about. Those who do are operating on the edge of profitability, and often aren't the kinds of businesses you really want to encourage anyway.

But, they're absolutists... too much taxes can be a problem for business, so they rationalize that any taxes are a problem. That's of course, nuts... but they have a hard time seeing it.

Usually what they'll counter with is that California has "other attractions"... which is a complete BS deflection.

Anyway, thanks for the diary - I hope this gets more traction in the public debate.

Freedom isn't free. That's why we pay taxes.

but if the taxes were too high, they wouldn't be enough to get people to stay here or businesses to start here.

As a native Californian (born in Berkeley), I've lived elsewhere for varying lengths of time (6 weeks to 6 years). I've always returned to Northern California. I've lived in So. CA, but don't consider it actually part of the California I love and have lived in for most of my 66 years.

Yeah, the taxes are high, but the opportunities, the freedoms, the ability to have civilized discussions about stuff and the civil grand jury system all make CA THE place to live!
