  •  I'm guessing "backlist" not synon.w/classic (0+ / 0-)

    anymore, original "Velveteen Rabbit" kind of thing (original illustration plates were destroyed in the melee of the 1970's and re-issues since then have only similar illos by a different artist.) Time was (she said creakily), "backlist" meant books that only sold a dozen or 3 per year, mostly to libraries public & school-type, to replace battered copies no longer handleable, and publishers were OK with it.

    When I asked "good thing-bad thing" i was kind of thinking about high-quality books of permanent value becoming lost in the deluge, and how long it takes an individual work to demonstrate longterm value.  The malleability of the young mind makes this seem more critical an issue than with adult reading.

      Another became, technically speaking, a bestseller on the backlist. Funny place, the backlist.
