  •  PS, Kos rightly said that discouragement (24+ / 0-)

is what kills GOTV efforts and turnout.

Posts like this will encourage us all to come together to win in 2014.

look for my eSci diary series Thursday evening.

It will demoralize voters as well.

If cutting Social Security & Medicare benefits for low income seniors is what Democrats do after they win a budget standoff, I'd hate to see what they do after they lose one.

    •  Have to disagree pretty strongly with this. (0+ / 0-)

I think Kos was talking about discouragement on the part of the voting public.  If he really meant that discouraging comments at DKos would lose elections, I'd have to start wondering whether he was completely losing his perspective.

"Posts like this" have very little (causative) to do with whether an election is won or lost, at best, they might report how the voting public is feeling.

Real things, like shutting down the government, or cutting SS, have much more impact on voters than a comment someone makes on a political blog.  If political blogs are important at all it's because they might generate pressure on politicians to do the things that will not discourage voters.

I think it is a good bit of morale boosting to see poll results like this, but I also have a strong reaction to prognostications of the demise of the GOP as a national party. I distinctly recall references to a 'regional rump party' shortly after November 2008 coming from a guy with a user ID of 1 on this very site...

Seniors had their savings crushed right before the 2008 election, and the vast majority still reverted to type and voted for The Old Man and His Nurse. Remember, most New England Patriots fans shrugged off Spygate, and a lot of Yankees fans still want A-Roid to hit lotsa homers.

Don't ever underestimate team loyalty, don't underestimate tribalism, and don't underestimate the power of disinformation or of habit. And for the love of God don't underestimate the ability of democrats to hand over this advantage by being all compromisey on SS and Medicare.

But above all, don't give up on our older folks. I'm working on a few guys in my tennis league; I find it helps to get them good and winded before I hold forth.
