    I think it is a good bit of morale boosting to see poll results like this, but I also have a strong reaction to prognostications of the demise of the GOP as a national party. I distinctly recall references to a 'regional rump party' shortly after November 2008 coming from a guy with a user ID of 1 on this very site...

    Seniors had their savings crushed right before the 2008 election, and the vast majority still reverted to type and voted for The Old Man and His Nurse. Remember, most New England Patriots fans shrugged off Spygate, and a lot of Yankees fans still want A-Roid to hit lotsa homers.

    Don't ever underestimate team loyalty, don't underestimate tribalism, and don't underestimate the power of disinformation or of habit. And for the love of God don't underestimate the ability of democrats to hand over this advantage by being all compromisey on SS and Medicare.

     But above all, don't give up on our older folks. I'm working on a few guys in my tennis league; I find it helps to get them good and winded before I hold forth.
