plague and pestilence.  They might have made it impossible for the GOP to win the presidency or the Senate for the foreseeable future.  They could even lose the House next year because of the tea party.   That is "incredibly successful" only in a Fox News stoked alternative reality, in the minds of the "unskewered polls" folks, and in the feeble minds of Tea Party bots.

    •  They are certainly in that position now. (0+ / 0-)

But after 45 years of rightward trending in this country, it's only been in the last decade that it's really started to hurt them electorally. Before that, they did an incredible job of pushing the Overton Window where they wanted it, including winning 7 out of 10 presidential elections between 1968 and 2004.

I don't know about you, but if someone had told me in 2000 that in 2013 we would be on the verge of accomplishing marriage equality in almost every state, a decriminalization of marijuana use laws coming on with huge strides, the nation as a whole agreeing with Democrats that we have man-made carbon pollution that needs to be dealt with (and those clinging to the theory that there is no such thing widely dismissed as kooks), that we have the chance to achieve almost universal health care (up to 95% coverage at least) for the first time in our history, that we have our first black American President, which is likely to be followed by our first female President in 2016, on and on and on the list goes, I would have not believed it, with "Overlord" Cheney and his puppet George W. Bush taking center stage.

Also, don't forget that Republicans have lost the popular vote to Democrats in 5 of the last 6 elections, from 1992 onward until 2012, 20 years.  Plus the likelihood that there will be another in 2016 and perhaps from thereon out for quite some time, given rapid demographic changes highly unfavorable for Republican prospects on a national level.

        •  Social issues, (0+ / 0-)

while they may be important to us as individuals, matter little to TPTB on the right. Their concerns are money and power. Let us smoke our pot and marry whom we like, just as long as they can continue to accumulate wealth without social responsibility.

The real issues are income inequality and the environment, and on those we have made little or no progress since the day Reagan was inaugurated, in fact we may still be losing ground due to inertia. It doesn't matter if "the nation as a whole" agrees with us on those issues, if their elected officials ignore their needs and desires. "The nation as a whole" needs to figure out how to wrest power from the hands of the plutocrats before they'll see any real progress on those fronts.

It may be that we"re just about to turn the corner, and move back to some measure of democracy and fairness, but I don't see it happening yet. And I expected it to have happened long ago.
