    But.

    I have long resisted the possibility of getting a third cat. Our two older (6 years) ones are just lovely, and I worried about getting another one and the possibility of disrupting their serenity. At least that's what I repeatedly told my daughter who frequently wanted to bring a kitten home after a stint volunteering at the local shelter.

    I realized, however, that getting this kitten was also for me an act of faith that I would be around for another 20 years. Of course, there are no guarantees. Still, for me to have that internal attitude of optimism is encouraging. That's not my default response.
