  •  Obenshain family history (7+ / 0-)

Obenshain's father, Richard Obenshain, was running for the U.S. Senate as, naturally, a hard-core wingnut in 1978. The GOP nominee was chosen at a convention, where he was running against John Warner, a former Nixon/Ford appointee and the seventh husband of Elizabeth Taylor. (Someone jokingly placed the name of Eddie Fisher, husband # 4, into nomination.)

Shortly after Obenshain was nominated at the convention, he was killed in the crash of a small plane while returning from a campaign event. Warner was chosen as the replacement nominee, was elected that November, and served for thirty years.
