  •  it started in 2001 (5+ / 0-)

Mark Warner won and began working to set up an infrastructure to support Kaine's win, then Webb in 06 was a real tipping point, and then Obama in 08 pushed dems over the hump. Virginia will always be a competitive race at the presidential level now.

Managed small races in VA and DC. Worked political for DGA. Follow me @bharatkrishnan if you want to be my friend.

    •  Actually I'm not sure it will be competitive (6+ / 0-)

for much longer.  The demographics are changing rapidly in Virginia, and by 2020 this could well be a blue state.

Don't call these racist thugs the tea party, they are *teabaggers*! Please don't insult the original Tea Party as they were patriots. Call them TeaBaggers!

      •  So true (0+ / 0-)

The change started in the 1990s when Dems started moving into Fairfax County (like my parents, we live in CA now though,) and into the 2000s. The rest of the state still outweighed NoVa though but in the mid-late 2000s, there were enough people in NoVa to make a big difference in the voting in VA.

The old pattern was that Dems would do well in the heavily African American urban areas and rural areas (plus Appalachia) in order to outvote the Richmond suburbs and NoVa which generally did not work. With NoVa going so strongly blue though, it is practically impossible for Repubs to win.

      •  As pa. (at least the eastern third) going bluer. (0+ / 0-)

eessentially the Atlantic seaboard bits. And TPers (and the billionaire who bought the NC legislature) may have edged NC towards verrrry light pink or baby blue.
