It looks it was designed with a set of wooden blocks.

Its in the shadow of the Washington Monument, which looks like ONE wooden block.  Everything can't look like it's trying to be Rome....lord knows we have enough of that in DC thanks to L'Enfant's plan.

And its supposed to be reminiscent of the architectural styles of the 1940's Art Deco/Beaux Arts.

      •  The Washington Monument is based on the (3+ / 0-)

Obelisk's of Rome and Egypt before them. It has a grace and simplicity that I only wish the WWII memorial had.

Art Deco was a graceful movement that the WWII memorial tries and fails to achieve. I think they blew it on the massing and details. Those bronze wreaths look like they each weigh two tons. Compare that to the "gargoilles" on the Chrysler Building who have no visual weight.

Its not hardcore Art Deco (thankfully).

The Beaux Arts bring in the perfect symmetry, structured noble spaces, classical throwbacks like garlanded wreaths, the exaggerated emphasis on clasps and fasteners (like the exposed crossbeams on every state column), all the bas-relief panels

But then some of the overwrought arches were squared off with Art Deco's straight lines and etched geometry.

The Beaux Arts influence keeps out the Art Deco gaudiness and shiny materials and the Art Deco reigns in some of the Beaux Arts' baroque decoration and making every thing over done in arches and colonnades.

And it shouldn't be too Art Deco anyway, since WWII is considered to be what ended the Art Deco fad.... otherwise the thing would have gold-leaf sunbursts on either end and the whole center area would be high-gloss bakelite and chrome inlays or something....
