    exchanges.

I thought the point of the ACA was that every insurance plan is in the exchange so we all share in the cost of insurance
No, not all plans are in the exchange.

The whole point of the exchanges was for states to sign up the insurance companies that wanted to participate in providing insurance plans through the ACA. These companies would then compete for people to purchase them by lowering their prices which was the idea.

Some states declined the opportunity to set up their own state's exchange, and they were therefore added to the federal, US, exchange. But there will be plans not on the exchange, I believe, although they will be subject to certain laws about coverage such as pre-existing conditions no longer allowed to influence price or coverage.

    Hope this helps.

So I assumed all the plans are in the exchange.

And again, my insurance company sent no information to clarify the difference between plans in the exchange and out of the exchange, or, for that matter, the fact that there are two kinds of plans!

It seems like a requirement for all insurance companies should be to fully inform customers of all the plans: those available both in and out of the exchange.

Thanks, all this is really helping to clarify!! I appreciate everyone's input. I just hope others find out before they get scammed.
