    I agree with everything you said.

    My only concern at this point (thanks all of you who have helped clarify this for me) is this:

    There has been no communication in the media, or by my insurance company or on the exchange website that says explicitly:

    There are two kinds of plans. One kind is inside the exchange and the other is outside the exchange. You can buy either one, and you will fulfill your obligation to have insurance. But they will cover different things and cost different amounts.

    Having something clearly stated like that would help clarify tremendously.
    Plus one question I have is this: if I buy a plan through the exchange, how does my insurance company know that I got the plan? Do I have to notify them?

    And if buy a plan outside of the exchange, how do I notify the IRS or whoever at the government, so they know I fulfilled my obligation?
