  •  How do I explain to my wife.... (2+ / 0-)

We live in Alabama, and I am a federal employee and she is a city employee so we both have healthcare through our employers.  The problem is that we have a lot of friends that are either carpenters, farmers, or hairstylists that she talks to way more than I do.  Their insurance per month costs are going through the roof.... doubling for some, some are having their insurance go up by a couple of hundred dollars a month.

She has been seeing the letters that her friends are showing her and one of them had their insurance cost go from 460 dollars a month to over 700.  I honestly have no clue how to defend that and wish someone could explain why that is happening.

      •  You are correct. (6+ / 0-)

They have to offer you an alternative to the crap they were offering you before, and it's meant to be ridiculous.

No one gets to bitch until they've done their diligence and found out what's available to them on the exchanges.  In a world without Republican poison, there would be informational clinics on every street corner, non-stop TV and radio ads.  Every representative would be expected to offer help, forms, etc. in their offices.  It's a fucking nightmare because Republicans have made it so.

    •  Rate hike letters from insurers =/= Obamacare (7+ / 0-)

Yes, lots of insurers are raising individual rates because they are pretty much throwing in the towel and giving up on this market.  That is why people are getting these big rate hike letters. There people need to get on the Obamacare website and check the actual rates, and actual subsidies for themselves.

That they are offering an alternative, and it's usually expensive.  The letter then tell these people to check the exchanges where they will get more competitive rates and subsidies.

Are there current policies ACA compliant?  If not, they border on fraud anyway and would have given very little coverage.

The 'lie' out there is that you have to take the other plan the company offers you, when you are free to shop on the exchanges.

Average Joe sixpack is saying his insurance is doubling under the ACA?

Come cannot be serious that you believe all that. In Alabama...come on!

      •  The reason I believe it... (0+ / 0-)

is because the people showing her their letters are Democrats like my wife and I.  I was a big proponent for the ACA and that is why they are asking her about it to see if I have any explaination as to why their insurance is going through the roof.  I can't figure it out.  The people that she has been talking to are her friends and I would describe them as solidly middle class so no subsidies....  it is baffling to me and I am left looking like a jerk for talking about how great it was going to be.

Even a rise of 100-200 bucks a month is rough on a middle class family with children.  I guess I just need to log on to one of the sites and find out how much the different plans would cost on the exchange.

        •  Your policy did NOT comply with the standards (0+ / 0-)

set down by the ACA...THAT is why it is being canceled. YOUR insurance company does NOT want to give you those standards.

You said Doubled by the way...
