thread. What if the Koch brothers decided to make it a priority to have students attend every speech by any progressive or liberal at every major college and disrupt those speeches to the point they were all cancelled. Would we be OK with that? According to most of the posts here those students would be practicing their First Amendment rights.

was not directed and manipulated by such a repulsive force as the Koch brothers, or any external force for that matter.  The students responded from their own personal sense of injustice and, I believe that their objection to everything this man stands for is well justified and sincere. That is 'free' speech, free of Koch manipulated fabrication.

Excise the presumption that the Koch protesters are not sincere.  If they were sincere, would not that also be applauded?

The problem with the endorsement of shouting down one's opponents is evident in your comment.  You very easily shift to finding some basis to draw a distinction in order to protect the shutting down of some speech over others.  That is the moral problem- someone gets to decide what is acceptable for others to hear.  Does that not pose a problem for you?

The protest was organized by several student groups, most of whom had no direct contact with the NYPD. If the college Tea Party, or Young Republicans, or College Conservatives did the same thing they would be acting on the principle that, in their view, the liberal ideas are a threat to the US and its founding principles, and would be sincere in their beliefs. The Koch brothers would just be helping them focus on one aspect, liberal speakers invited on campus.

The fundamental issue is that when a college invites a guest to speak, any guest, on any topic, they should be allowed to speak. When any group decides to silence speech on the basis of the speaker, or the content of their speech, you are on a slippery slope that can lead to fewer speakers and less free speech. This type of behavior can easily cut both ways and should never be condoned.
