So let me begin by saying this: I know that there are millions of Americans who are content with their health care coverage – they like their plan and they value their relationship with their doctor. And that means that no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what. My view is that health care reform should be guided by a simple principle: fix what’s broken and build on what works.

... or your lying eyes? Where you are reading "Period.", what it existentially is, is "Asterisk."

Clearly just a transcription mistake that the person who typed up the final copy of the speech made, because "." and "*" are so easy to mistake.

      Insert sardonic emoticon here.

Pure transcription error. It was originally written to read "If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Asterisk. No one will take it away. No matter what*"

" unless your plan is not grandfathered in & does not meet the minimum standard."

"** except for the noted exceptions."

You just have to squinch your eyes a bit more and believe a bit harder. Staying awake for 36 hours continuously and then having some mushrooms of questionable provenance may also help with your ability to get beyond your habit of reading the "words" as they were "literally said", and push through to the ultimate transcendent truth that the President can never tell an untruth, he simply sometimes tells truths that are beyond our meager powers of comprehension, trapped as we are in bourgeois concepts like "words" actually "meaning what they normally mean".
