    and that there are not enough private insurers in your region.  I think you only have Anthem and Healthnet.  The big counties have a lot more and that drops the premium.  

    There will be more insurers on the CA exchange next year. For this year, I would suggest going directly to the insurance co site.  I believe your premium would be about $100 per month higher in the CA exchange than the figure you quoted.

      Notice that Kaiser is available in surrounding counties. However, the Docs in Santa Cruz/Monterey decided many years ago to bar Kaiser from the area. That happened before 1989 because that's when I found I had to change my employer-provided coverage so that my son, who attended UC Santa Cruz, could have health coverage.  

      My friend actually left the town she loved (Santa Cruz) because she could not use her Kaiser Health plan  without driving very long distances, over the hill to Santa Clara or East to another Kaiser.  It's even possible to use Kaiser if you live in Inverness or Point Reyes in Marin Cty., but not Santa Cruz or Monterey...
