  •  I can see both sides of means testing. It makes (3+ / 0-)

sense that a person like me (middle-class, not struggling economically) should pay more for services than someone with a lower income. However, it also makes programs more vulnerable because the poor have less power. If a program is available only to low income people, it is a target for the Ryan budget types.
Social Security, which is not means-tested, has some protection because it benefits people like me.
And to add to that -- the days of guaranteed pensions from employment are over for most people. My father could have lived very comfortably without Social Security because he had a very safe and good pension. OTOH, my husband's and my retirement are dependent on what we've put away over the years (with some matching contributions from our employers). The only guaranteed income we have for retirement is Social Security. We've never been extravagant and we saved money, but Social Security is an absolutely essential part of our retirement.  I think that's true of just about everyone we know.

While Democrats work to get more people to vote, Republicans work to ensure those votes won't count.

    •  The thing is, means testing means (0+ / 0-)

The lower income people have to fill out more forms, all of which have dire threats in them of jailing and/or fines if they don't do it right, along with being looked down on my those with more resources.

It's a nightmare for them. That's why so many decide it's better to starve, go homeless, be sick and die, or otherwise suffer than to deal with it, especially if they are having any kind of mental problems like cognitive decline or mental illness.

As I said before, it's a nightmare for the lower classes, imposed on them by those that will never have to go through that because they are "afraid" someone that doesn't "deserve" it will get something.
