  •  Republican Colleen Hanabusa definitely be defeated (3+ / 0-)

Given you're based in Hawaii, I had a feeling the infamous Hanabusa would vote for this legislation.

What can we do to ensure Senator Brian Schatz defeats Hanabusa hard in the upcoming primary, as well as a more progressive Democrat takes over Hanabusa's seat?

    •  Money and get the word out (2+ / 0-)

Hanabusa is campaigning on 4 strategies:

      1. Sen Inouye wanted me (he probably did but it turns out the infamous letter saying this was robosigned)

      2. I'm Japanese so all the Japanese will vote for me.

      3. There's no difference between us on positions so vote for me because I'm older and have more experience.

      4. PhARMA lobby is pouring money into ads for her.

A similar strategy to the "I'm Japanese" strategy backfired against Mufi Hannemann who tried it against Neil Abercrombie in the 2010 governor's election.  People in Hawai'i don't like racial politics.  Although, to be fair, Hanabusa is trying to generalize that most all the Japanese will vote for her because of her Japanese name...not ACTUALLY coming out and saying she's better because she's Japanese.

The two most helpful actions would be:

      1. Get the word out that progressive Brian Schatz has a very different voting record that conserva-dem Colleen Hanabusa.

      2. Donate  to Brian's campaign.  He has more money (mostly in small donations) but having a huge drug lobby operating a campaign on Hanabusa's behalf tends  to even out the playing field somewhat.
